- Utsuwa Tabi Saga Karatsu Edition 1-

“UTSUWA KIRYO” started as a journey around food and pottery.


The first utsuwa tabi was
Karatsu ware from Saga Prefecture is said to be made by 80% of makers and 20% of users.

We traveled to the town of Karatsu to meet five writers.

This time we will be introducing Kentaro Murayama's Kentaro Kiln.

"Kentaro kiln"


Kentaro Murayama of Kentaro Kiln sets up a kettle on a hill overlooking Karatsu Bay and Niji no Matsubara.
While valuing traditional Karatsu ware techniques and materials, we continue to explore the beauty of use and create modern day tools.


“I want to do things that can only be done here as much as possible.”
In order to bring out the texture and charm of the earth, unnecessary decorations have been omitted.
Yet Kentaro's utensils make you feel the warmth of his hands.


While waiting for my own aesthetic sense to mature,
I want to take my time and enjoy it.

Born in Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture in 1978
2003 Graduated from Arita Ceramics College, studied under Kiyomi Kawakami
2008 Built a kiln in Karatsu City and became independent.
